Community Action

Every year, Fudge Kitchen selects a new charity to support through fund-raising, sporting craziness, awareness building and donations from dedicated sales.

In the past, these have included The Lily Foundation, Ogwen Valley Mountain Rescue Organisation and Breast Cancer Now. In each case, the charity has had some direct connection with Fudge Kitchen staff, and their selection has been about saying ‘thank you’ and raising both funds and awareness for their cause and worthy work. We encourage readers to click through the links to discover more about each organisation.

Yorkshire Air Ambulance2020 - Yorkshire Air Ambulance

Total raised - so far: £618.00
For 2020, Fudge Kitchen is delighted to be supporting the wonderful work of the Yorkshire Air Ambulance (YAA). This year’s cause is like all of them, close to our hearts, but has special significance to the Assistant Manager of our Bath shop, Tia Hancy, whose Dad was rescued by emergency services, including the Yorkshire Air Ambulance after a farming accident in 2013.

The Yorkshire Air Ambulance is a lifeline for rural and less connected communities, being able to reach the scene of an emergency more quickly than traditional services. Yorkshire Air Ambulance (YAA) is an independent rapid response charity, which has carried more than 5,400 people in its 13-year history. It needs to raise £9,990 each day to keep its two helicopters in the air and maintained - equivalent to £3.6 million each year.

Without any direct government funding, the only help the charity receives is through the secondment of its paramedics from the Yorkshire Ambulance Service NHS Trust. So, it is with great pleasure that Fudge Kitchen can support the work of this amazing charity.

Body & Soul2019 - Body & Soul

Total raised: £1,976
This year, Fudge Kitchen has elected to support Body & Soul, a small, community-based charity in Islington, London, run by clinicians, specialists and volunteers, that is quietly saving young lives by offering a literal lifeline for those affected by trauma, mental health disorders and suicide; and for their families. They also work to raise awareness of the stigma their members face and to empower young people through empathy and compassion, giving them the strength to face the past and hope for the future.

Underpinning their rigorous empirical, scientific basis, explains Body & Soul director, Emma Colyer MBE, are “three fundamental values: bravery, love and wisdom. Everything we do follows from these, and they will continue as the bedrock of the work we do.”

The “You Are Not Alone” programme … Fudge Kitchen will be specifically raising money for Body & Soul’s “You Are Not Alone” programme, supporting young people who have attempted suicide and struggle with self harm. And every penny raised will be put to work.

Ogwen Valley Mountain Rescue2018 - Ogwen Valley Mountain Rescue

Total raised: £2,446.18
Ogwen Valley Mountain Rescue - Its members are on stand-by 24 hours a day, 365 days of the year; giving their time for free to assist fellow users of the great outdoors who have come to grief. Our Ian from Bath suggested Ogwen as this year’s charity due to his brother being rescued by them.

People have been scrambling over the hills for pleasure for centuries. The first recorded ascent of Snowdon was in 1639. In 1778 Thomas Pennant was bagging summits. In 1854 George Borrow was exploring “Wild Wales”. However, it was during the Victorian era that a greater interest was taken in the mountains. Traditionally, before the formation of Mountain Rescue Teams, those who ventured into the hills and mountains had to be able to look after themselves out of necessity. Early in 1964 Ogwen Cottage was sold to Birmingham Education Authority. Now the staff had the pleasure of school holidays. It was during the Summer holidays of 1964 when one of the instructors, John Glews, fell off a new route on Clogwyn Du. During his rescue by a hastily formed party, he soon realized that there was a need for a dedicated Mountain Rescue Team. Thus OVMRO was conceived in the Autumn of that year. It was made up of the Ogwen Cottage Staff, Mountaineering Club of North Wales, Bangor University Mountaineering Club and a few other regulars. The Inaugural Meeting was held in March 1965. OVMRO continues to be one of the busiest Mountain Rescue Teams in the country assisting the Police and Ambulance authorities with rough terrain search and rescue in Northern Snowdonia.

Lily Foundation2017 - Lily Foundation

Total raised: £1,200.43
The Lily Foundation is a charity which is committed to finding a cure for Mitochondrial Disease through funding research, raising awareness and family support. A cause chosen by our King of fudge, Patch. After his close friends’ baby was diagnosed with the disease, he wanted to raise awareness and support of Mitochondrial Disease.

Supporting medical research into mitochondrial disease is a fundamental aspect of the foundations work, not only because it could potentially lead to a cure but also because it helps to improve lives now. Lily-funded research projects have already resulted in faster, less invasive patient diagnosis and helped families affected by mitochondrial illness to have healthy babies. Several promising avenues for new treatments are also currently being explored. Over 10 years the foundation have built an incredible network of support among families dealing with mitochondrial disease. The foundation states "By bringing families together and listening to their needs we become stronger and better able to achieve our aims. Together our families are 'The Lily Foundation' and it is their amazing strength, energy and spirit that makes our work possible".
